Historical PerspectiveSeven things the church must do (Part 1)
By Phil J. Baker, CEO
Visitors to the Hosea 4:6 website will find a page entitled “Call to the Church.” The substance of that page is a list of seven actions the Church must take if we are to restore America to its foundation. The foundation, of course, is Jesus Christ and the Judeo-Christian values which our founding fathers incorporated into the framework of our democratic republic. (Over the next few weeks I will be discussing in detail those seven principles.)
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the two main (though not all) supportive documents that form the practical basis of our legal and political system, that is, the mechanism by which our government is to function, have at their core an unwavering faith in a Supreme Being. The vast majority of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christians. Even founders whom historical revisionists have deemed to be “deists” (often erroneously) drew not from some abstract idea of an unknowable deity but from the pages of the Old and New Testaments.
Indeed, they wrote what they believed. They acted on what they believed. And, what they believed was that “all men are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.” Even the late President John F. Kennedy understood that. “The rights of man come not from government but from the hand of God,” Kennedy affirmed in his 1961 Inaugural Address.
Today the United States of America stands on the precipice of destruction because from within its borders there is an evil attack upon the foundational principles that have guided this nation for most of its history. It is a multi-front assault upon our heritage, constitution, and culture. I believe we can avoid a slide into the abyss of mediocrity (or worse) only if we can somehow beat back the forces of secular humanism and outright godlessness at work in America today.
I also believe that God is looking to the Church to step up to the plate. In this installment we will expound upon the first in the list of seven things the church must do to win back our nation – BELIEVE.
“Do not be afraid; only believe …”
When God first called me out to begin Hosea 4:6 Ministries (it took almost three years for me to respond), I surveyed the political and cultural landscape of America and wanted to retreat. As I began to delve into what was happening in our culture, I saw a giant, a Goliath armed with the giant spear of a 1947 court ruling that declared “a wall of separation between church and state.”
I saw the shield of judicial activism that was systematically undermining the United States Constitution. I saw the javelin of disdain being wielded by elected officials and bureaucrats who have forgotten that they are servants of the people and the Constitution not gods who can force their own ideas upon the people of America.
And, I heard the taunts of a national news media committed not to fair and honest journalism but to their mammoth champion called Secular Humanism, aka “Progressivism.”
At first, I was overwhelmed and decided that nothing could be done … but God reminded me to just believe.
I remembered that David never wavered as he walked confidently out to Goliath with nothing but a staff, a sling and five stones that he picked up from the brook he had to cross on his way to face the giant. David knew something that Goliath didn’t know, something that even his countrymen had forgotten. “… I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defiled,” he claimed. “This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you …” (1 Samuel 17:45, NKJV).
David didn’t enter the fight believing in his own strength. He relied instead on his belief that God would win the battle for him … and He did.
It would be easy for Christians to just give up, to concede defeat, and accept the death of our nation. A man named Jairus certainly had cause to feel the same way about the death of his precious daughter. Although Jesus had promised to come to his house and heal her, the Master didn’t arrive until after the girl had died.
The crowd of mourners gathered at Jairus’ home laughed when Jesus said the young girl was only sleeping. But, despite the taunts and snickers (something that seems greatly out of place given the circumstances), Jesus looked into the eyes of the grieving father and gave an instruction that Christians in America should always remember: “Do not be afraid, only believe.”
The Church is called to do more than sit idly by and watch the Christian foundation of America pulled from under us. We are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of truth. We are called to believe that God can and will respond positively to our faith and actions.
To conquer the giant before us, we have believe that God can do what we can’t do on our own. But, we also must believe that the battle is real, not just some political tool being used by “the extreme right” to bolster their own power base. And, we must believe that we as individuals can and must make a difference in our society by understanding and acting upon the righteous principles dictated by God in His Holy Word and incorporated in the structure of our government.
